Writing Horror:

Tools, Techniques, & Takeaways
that make a story work

An eight-week course with weekly exercises, peer to peer feedback, and readings to help students write horror and explore what makes us scared,
with Alex Gonzalez

(brought to you by The Resort)

An eight-week workshop for 8 writers

This course is about horror, writing horror, and exploring what makes us scared. Whether you’re a novice writer, or you’re more experienced in fiction but have yet to step into genre, this course is a safe space to get vulnerable, icky, and more than a little taboo.

This course is for students who may feel intimidated by the word “literary” and just want to write something that makes your skin crawl. We’ll go over world building, suspense, the uses of narrators, and how to follow through to a grim conclusion. Again, all skill levels are welcome.

Students should come to class expecting to encounter some challenging and/or triggering content, but this Zoom classroom is meant to be a safe space and students should be considerate of their peers and be willing to include content warnings on their own workshop pieces, if necessary.

In this course, you will…

01

…be challenged to have a weekly turnaround of exercises, stories, and peer to peer feedback.

02

…pick one weekly assignment to expand into a proper 5-6K word short story.

03

…receive readings from various sub-genres like cosmic, sci-fi, erotic, splatter, extreme, etc. Larger books will be suggested but not expected.

04

ALL SKILL LEVELS ARE WELCOME.

“Alex is one of the most talented and wide-ranging writers I know. I never know what to expect when I start reading something new of his, but I know I’ll be entertained. Alex's writing can be funny, scary, horrifying, creepy, but it's never stuffy or static, and always grips me.”

-James Folta,
creator of Points in Case

“I love writing gross stuff and have really struggled knowing if there was a home for it. I hope I get to take another workshop with you in the future!”
